Press Statement: NAACP CALIFORNIA HAWAII STATE CONFERENCE RESPONDS TO NAACP OAKLAND ISSUE

“The NAACP California Hawaii State Conference’s Branch leadership and members are committed to working together and not against each other. We are committed to unity over divisiveness and we welcome all seekers of justice to renew their memberships to be a part of the important conversations in the NAACP, leading the fight to end racial inequality.

Per NAACP Bylaws, it is only the Branch President who is permitted to speak on behalf of the Branch. Many of those who have voiced concerns in the recent letter to National are not, in fact, NAACP members nor leadership in the NAACP Oakland Branch.

A longstanding priority of the NAACP and its branches is to reimagine policing. This means having conversations with mayors and local officials to redefine public safety, review the use of force policies, and address systemic racism within law enforcement, which the NAACP Oakland Branch has continually worked towards.

We stand by the NAACP Oakland Branch in their pursuit of justice and a safe community for all in Oakland.”
