“The Texas Legislature’s decision underscores what is at stake for our democracy. Redistricting is not about political parties. It is about fair representation and protecting the voices of communities of color. With approximately 6 percent of California’s population being Black, we must ensure that our maps reflect the strength and diversity of our state. California now has an obligation to lead by example and adopt maps that expand access, increase accountability, and strengthen an inclusive democracy where every community’s voice is heard at the ballot box.
