As Californians prepare for the June 2 Primary Election, I encourage every eligible voter to make their voice heard. I urge you to return your ballot in person at an official drop box or polling location to ensure it is received and counted. Elections shape the policies, leadership, and decisions that directly impact our communities. Our right to vote was secured through generations of sacrifice and struggle, and we must never take that right for granted.
The June 2 Primary Election is an opportunity to help determine the future of our state and our nation. Whether the issues are education, economic opportunity, healthcare, criminal justice reform, environmental justice, or civil rights, every vote matters. Democracy works best when all voices are represented.
As we enter the month of June, we are also called to reflect on our shared history, celebrate the strength of our communities, and recommit ourselves to the ongoing pursuit of justice. This month, we recognize three important observances that remind us of who we are, where we have been, and the future we are working to build together: Juneteenth, Pride Month, and Father’s Day.
Juneteenth stands as a powerful testament to both the promise of freedom and the persistence of injustice. On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, enslaved African Americans in Texas finally learned they were free. While we celebrate this milestone in our nation’s journey toward liberty, we must also remember the lesson it teaches us: justice delayed is justice denied.
Today, that lesson remains as relevant as ever. Across our nation, we continue to witness efforts to restrict voting rights, undermine educational opportunities, limit healthcare access, and roll back hard-fought civil rights protections. The NAACP California Hawaii State Conference remains steadfast in its mission to challenge inequity wherever it exists and to ensure that every person has the opportunity to thrive. Freedom is not a destination—it is a responsibility that each generation must protect and advance.
June is also Pride Month, a time to honor the courage, resilience, and contributions of LGBTQIA+ individuals who have helped shape our communities and our nation. Pride was born from a movement that challenged discrimination and demanded dignity, equality, and human rights. Those same values continue to guide us today.
As attacks on LGBTQIA+ communities, particularly transgender youth, increase across the country, we must be clear in our commitment: there is no place for hate, discrimination, or exclusion in our society. The fight for LGBTQIA+ equality is inseparable from the broader struggle for civil rights. The NAACP stands in solidarity with all people seeking to live authentically, safely, and free from fear. Our collective liberation is bound together, and we are strongest when we stand united.
This month, we also celebrate Father’s Day and recognize the fathers, grandfathers, mentors, coaches, and father figures who help shape the next generation of leaders. Their guidance, sacrifice, and unwavering support strengthen families and communities across California, Hawaii, and beyond. We honor those who lead by example, nurture with compassion, and inspire young people to pursue lives of purpose and service.
As we reflect on these important observances, let us remember that progress has always been driven by ordinary people willing to do extraordinary things in pursuit of justice. Whether we are advancing racial equity, protecting voting rights, defending truth in education, supporting LGBTQIA+ communities, or strengthening our families, our mission remains unchanged.
Together, we will continue the work. Together, we will continue the fight. Together, we will build a future that reflects the values of justice, equity, and freedom for all.
